Madhya Pradesh's Malwa plateau — the belt running through Neemuch and Mandsaur districts — has semi-arid conditions and well-drained soils suited to Withania somnifera cultivation, and generations of farmers in the region have grown it as a rotation or dedicated crop. Enough volume concentrated in one area over enough years is what turns a farming region into a trading hub: buyers show up because sellers are already there, and vice versa. That's the basic mechanic behind Neemuch's position as one of India's largest ashwagandha markets, alongside Pratapgarh and a handful of other Rajasthan/MP mandis.
Neemuch's Krishi Upaj Mandi operates under a Produce Marketing Committee (PMC) — the standard structure for regulated agricultural markets in Madhya Pradesh. Farmers bring harvested roots to the mandi yard, where registered traders bid in open auction. The mechanism matters for buyers two levels removed from the mandi floor: it means the base price on any given day is set by real-time supply and demand among multiple bidders, not a single buyer's quoted rate.
Ashwagandha follows a post-monsoon sowing cycle. Roots are lifted during the peak harvest window between January and April, which is when mandi volumes — and price volatility — are highest. Trading continues through the rest of the year off stored stock, but the fresh-harvest window is when grading houses like ours do the bulk of our annual procurement.
